Postsecret of the week :: Hick parents

hicks

i loved junebug for a gazillion reasons. if you’ve seen it you’ll understand why amy adams is top of list, but next to her is the beautiful handling of ‘meeting the family’. madelein (a gallery curator played by the gorgeous embeth davidtz) and george (mr moneybags) are city slickers, but where madelein was born to wealthy, worldly well-travelled folks, george comes from nearly-hickville, conservative north carolina.

they visit his folks when she has to travel to the area to meet a recluse artist who lives there.

i saw the movie ages ago, but i remember watching george’s character change through the eyes of madelein and i remember how poignant her surprise at their separation (even their lovemaking changes…no sound please) and difference when she sees him take on the character of the man he would’ve been if he’d stayed. but then it moves through that, and she also sees all these other beautiful facets to him that she didn’t know about.

yadda yadda, movie comes to an end and with the sharing of a cigarette on the way back home, their usual conversation starts back up and they’re ‘them’ again.

i admire more the people who’ve shown their mettle and drive

this postsecret reminded me of that. this weird vulnerability and trust it takes to introduce our heart people to a place we worked hard to leave or change from – in case they judge us as harshly as we have… which is what i imagine is happening in this postsecret.

anyway.

i admire more the people who’ve shown their mettle and drive to be more than the set of circumstances they were handed at birth – whether those circumstances are lack of money, upheaval, dogma or a culture of spiritual poverty. (and by ‘spiritual’ i don’t mean ‘religious’.)

there is more story to be found with the elephant than the tick that takes a ride on its tail

dear postcard-sender-inner if your lady friend is worth your love and respects you as an individual, she won’t be judging you for your ‘hick family’. amiright?

after all, there is more story to be found with the elephant than the tick that takes a ride on its tail.

soz silverspooners, but thems the facts.

oao pretty plum faces,
tickles and deep affection always
